My 15 year old really wants an old car that expresses who he is. He has looked at Ford Mavericks, Toyota Coronas, and other mostly 7os low HP cars. He doesn’t care about going fast, he wants to look cool. Did I mention girls in this? He is begging me not to explain things like airbags and ABS to his mom. If I wanted to be a cool Dad and pick up an old car for $2k- $5k what would you do? I have to have his back on girls. That shit is hard enough.

A fiat 124 spider

Or an old luxo barge

Honestly though as a teenager I can say 90% of highschool girls don’t really care about the car as long as it’s somewhat nice

Old cars won't really help him pick up girls, it'll really just attract more guys haha. Pick up a vintage BMW maybe? An E24 would be a sweet ride.

A Volvo - best an 80s wagon. I knew a kid who did pretty well with the ladies driving an orange one. And while there are no active safety features, there are passive safety features. When he has his first accident (and yes, he will, we all did) that car will sacrifice itself to save him.

When you at the student parking lot at the school I teach at there are some definite trends. Please note I teach at a private school so there are a lot of doctors/lawyers/engineers/financial people’s kids that go to my school.

By far and away the two most common vehicle types are the mom or dad’s old suv or the “newish” sedan. The ones that stand out to me are the ones that drive older (and by older I mean 90s or early 2000s) BMW/Mercs/Volvos that their parents intentionally kept to give to their kids knowing its still a reasonably safe car.

My GF loved the front bench in my Crown vic...

She’s 5" even, so she would just lounge her tiny self out in the front while I drove. She hates the Mustang because it doesn’t feel safe (and her friends hate it, but Idgaf), but the Jeep and my roomates Jeep she likes.

Luxobarg or old CJ.

I’ll probably catch some flak for this, but if he wants to look cool don’t buy him a car. Make him earn it himself. Or at the very least buy something that needs a good bit of work.

As someone whose parents were certainly in a position to buy me a car, but didnt, I have no respect for people flaunting cars their parents bought them. Its one thing to buy your kid a car, but if they’re going to be showing it off, well...

I’m going to second the older luxo-barge or truck.

A Benz 4 or 6 cyl is a great car, diesel or gas. A classic truck is a classic truck, it’s really hard to hate them, and if he could learn on it to fix it and keep it running, he’ll be able to handle any problem at all.

I would absolutely get something with airbags though. I’m not nearly as concerned with ABS as I am with good tires and better judgement. Airbags can absolutely save lives though. I’ve taken one to the face, I don’t want your son to.

I would personally push for manual though. Earn the respect from that first car.

Does he like wagons?

Find him one with a real frame on it, and upgrade the brakes (as much as you can). ABS is great and useful, but if the brakes work well, and the car is a 70s beast with a full frame and huge bumpers; that 2014 crumple box will take all the damage. Just make sure it has the shoulder belts.

An old British roadster. Some of my buddies has them in high school and girls loves them (the cars, not people). He will also learn to wrench on a car lots.

If I were you I’d show him the top gear episodes and Doug’s Ferrari video that prove that cool cars don't get girls. But you're probably better off letting him learn that for himself.

THIS. Cars don’t make women think you’re cool. If anything, they tell us how much of a spoiled kid or tool or autocross nerd, (looking at you, Miata bros) or tryhard you are.

He’s a teenage boy, so there’s a decent chance that he’s going to crash this car. Maybe it’ll just be a fender bender, maybe not. Most of the guys I knew in high school had 1 or 2 before they graduated. 2 guys in my class died in single car accidents during senior year. Both cars veered off of the road and hit something. I’m not saying you have to buy him a volvo with 47 airbags, but if you have to hide the lack of safety features from your wife, maybe it’s time to stop being the “cool dad” and just be a good dad.

Being 15 is not the time to own a car that “expresses who he is.” Who is he at 15? Being 15 is about making the best out of whatever ugly or boring car you might have. Drive a minivan, drive a Camry, but own that shit. Beat on it for a few years until you learn how to drive without hitting a curb or rear ending someone. Then you move on to the car that “expresses who you are.”

As for the girl thing, if she’s only dating you for your car, you dont want that kind of girl.

FWIW, I would talk him out of those options. My 66 Mustang was totaled by a guy in a Ford 350 who decided to turn left without looking. I was going 30 in a 35 and still ended up busting my head open as seatbelts (and seats) from 1966 really aren’t good safety equipment today. If I had been going 40, I might not have made it. I decided not to get another classic car until my kids are out of the house (and thus wouldn’t be riding with me in it).
